Post Two - April 7, 2009

I never really noticed how watery milk was, before. This just kind of... popped into my head while enjoying a glass of very cold milk. There's a constant image in my head of milk being very... thick, creamy. I'm not quite sure where this idea came from - it's certainly incorrect.

But I suppose that's just my perspective on things, right? In my head, milk is thick and creamy, not at all similar to what I'm drinking. I suppose this can vary from person to person, what they think milk looks and tastes like. Ask someone who's lactose intolerant - I can almost promise you that they'll think of it differently.

So everyone accepts that milk tastes and looks different, right? No major problems with that concept?

Then why, exactly, do people refuse to believe that there's more than one 'right' answer to most questions? Abortion, gay marriage, religion, politics. I suppose you could argue the relevance of the topics, but overall, isn't the idea the same? That everyone has differing opinions, and shouldn't be forced to meet one overall expectation?

I don't see people walking door to door, handing out pamphlets proclaiming: "Milk is white, watery, and thin! This is the only true way." Yet, frequently we're accosted by various groups, each fighting for a different belief, trying to push people towards their right. How often do I go onto a website, and see on someones profile, a short poem proclaiming abortion as murder? Informing people that anyone - anyone - who partakes in an abortion is a murderer. This brings the question, why can't there be times when it's right and wrong? I'm not pro-life, and I'm not pro-choice. I believe that under different circumstances, different things are acceptable. I would never expect a child to hit their parent - but what if it's in self defense.

There are always two immensely complicated sides to each 'big' thing. Gay marriage, for one. Some religious sectors consider this wrong, under their religion. But do they not fall under the law as well? Are they not as much of a person as a straight man or women? Again - two sides.

Sometimes though, it's simply amazing how closed minded people can be. They refuse to see and acknowledge both sides. Stubborn, and willfully, they go through life believing something they're not entirely informed about.

That's why I never have a problem with someone who expresses their opinion - considering, of course, they have been suitably informed about it. Uninformed people make unwise decisions, elect unwise people, support unwise things.

I encourage everyone to become as aware of the world around you as possible. Nothing is more important that the people's wide spread opinions. Without us, where would the world be? (Maybe a better place, environmentally, but regardless...) So research that new bill in the government, see what it's about. Go more in depth, instead of just listening to the ten second recap on the news.

Learn.
